In Dragon Ball Super, Jiren was originally designed to have a more vocal and expressive personality. Early drafts from Toei Animation portrayed him as an outspoken warrior who would frequently voice his thoughts and challenge others with bold declarations. However, Akira Toriyama decided to change this direction during development.
Instead of giving Jiren that role, Toriyama shifted the more expressive traits to Toppo, Jiren’s fellow Pride Trooper. This allowed Jiren to become a quiet, stoic figure with a tragic backstory that fueled his strength. His silence made his presence more intimidating and mysterious, giving him a different kind of depth. The decision added contrast to the team dynamic and made Jiren’s moments of emotion stand out even more.
