Bakugo Was Originally Meant to Be Kind and Polite

In the early concept stages of My Hero Academia, creator Kohei Horikoshi originally intended for Katsuki Bakugo to be a kind, friendly character. However, as the story developed, Horikoshi felt that version lacked impact. He drastically reworked Bakugo’s personality into the fiery, rude, and short-tempered rival fans know today—while still keeping his brilliance and talent intact.
This shift turned Bakugo into one of the most compelling characters in the series. His rough personality created tension, growth, and conflict that shaped his dynamic with Midoriya and others. Despite his aggressive attitude, his intelligence and determination never wavered. The contrast between his attitude and his skill became a key part of his appeal and character arc.
